Matthew N. Smith has a particular interest in multiple-family properties such as apartments, affordable/senior housing, congregant care facilities and student housing. Recent assignments include valuation of several large apartment complexes (150+ units), an assemblage of land acquired for development of a senior housing project, churches, SRO hotels and public housing projects. In his personal life, Matt is closely involved in the operation of his own residential properties, a family-owned horse-boarding facility in Marin County and extensive timberland holdings in the Sierras.

Qualified as an expert witness in Alameda and Contra Costa County Superior courts. Testified as an Expert Witness in arbitration proceedings as the Court Appointed Appraiser.

1997-present – Commercial Appraiser, Yovino-Young, Inc., Berkeley, CA. Complete complex commercial appraisal assignments in cooperation with the Chief Appraiser. Responsible for entire appraisal process including property inspection, public records research, data analysis, the valuation process and timely report generation. Property types include commercial/industrial, special-purpose properties and special valuation problems.

1996-1997 – Associate Appraiser, Larsson Skelte & Associates, Lafayette, CA. Completed complex commercial appraisal assignments under the direct supervision of the Chief Appraiser. Included training in commercial property inspection, data analysis and complex valuation assignments. Property types included commercial, new subdivisions and large apartment complexes.

1986-1996 – Principal Appraiser, Boyd Smith Real Estate Appraisal, Oakland, CA. Managed the operation of a residential real estate appraisal office in partnership with Linda L. Boyd, SRA. Supervised and coordinated the day-to-day operation of a staff of residential appraisers in preparing FNMA type reports for a variety of clients. Designed and maintained a multi-user computer network to generate appraisal reports. Personally inspected hundreds of properties annually.
